Deriba ain't so bad

I am getting to like this guy. Some may ridicule him for his collapses but one thing Deriba has going for him is that he runs his own race. Deriba is fun to follow because he does not settle for safe. He set an ambitious goal of 2:05 at the Houston Marathon. He was off his goal by more than 2 minutes but nonetheless set a course record.

Deriba is different. While others were afraid of the heat in Beijing, this guy went for gold and gave it everything. Haile tried to play it safe and avoided the marathon all together instead he gave us a half-hearted 10,000M and looked silly. Gete and Berhane made a mockery of the women's marathon. Deriba is all heart! He may be the breath of fresh air Ethiopian running needs - the un-Haile. A risk taker not afraid to make mistakes. Everyone can’t be and shouldn’t try be like Haile.

While I agree with you whole-heartedly about Merga's determination and heart in marathon races, I am in complete disagreement with you on your belittling of Haile's contributions in the Beijing 10K race and, especially the "Everyone can’t be and shouldn’t try be like Haile." comment.

First off, let me remind you (as I am sure you are a close follower of the sport of running and race strategies)that not only was Haile's presence in and of itself a HUGE morale boost for Kenenissa and Seleshi but the mid-race team strategy he implemented was critical to breaking down of possible competitors. Yes, I know he finished 5th - not a scene we like from a runner like Haile, but still he was an important factor in the race as it unfolded.

Secondly, I think EVERYONE should 'try' to be like Haile. Why not? Everyone's dreams starts as such - 'trying' to emulate someone. Who better do we have than Haile to do that? He is pride of Ethiopian running and all runners of the world, for that matter.

From my own exprience - I have run several marathons (that include Boston qualifications) - and I will tell you that very step of my running inspired by Haile and his accomplishments is what helps me break 'personal' records and Boston aspirations.

I like your blog though - continue please.
