As has been speculated by many over the past week, including this writer, Haile Gebrselassie announced today that he has reversed his decision to retire. "Athlete Haile Gebreslassie has announced that he will return to competition. It is remembered that Haile announced to the media his retirement from the world of competition, following his unexpected drop out at the recent New York marathon due to an unexpected illness he encountered. Today, at the occasion of starting a 10km race in Nekemte, Haile has exclusively informed the Ethiopian Television and Radio Agency that he will be preparing himself for the London 2012 Olympics. This report of Haile Gebrselassie's reversal of last week's decision to retire from competition has been filed by our reporter in the city of Nekemte, Fisseha Gebremichael."

This has become a soap opera. Haile's manager denies saying that Haile's phone has been tapped by the government to the NY Times reporter.
But everything Ethiopians know about the regime in power suggests that the NY Times reporter was merely reporting rather than stating his views on the tapping of Haile's phone. Given Haile's political aspiration, it would be surprising if the regime has not been spying on Haile.
The way Haile attempted to ridicule the NY Times report in his interview with Ethiopian TV also suggests to me that Haile and his manager all along planned for the spying story to be made public and then to deny it later.
