I would be happy with a strong gutsy performance. no DNF's. That is all:)

fast pace at the start... not sure if this is good news for our runners. I wish we had a strong competitor like Haile in this race. It's saddening that the marathon and Ethiopia are no longer synonymous

roocha said...

I predict:

Ryan Hall
Sammy Wanjiru
Jaoud Gharib

Anonymous said...

too fast for our guys. Kenyans are taking control.

welemta said...

Kenyans are crazy. Deribe Merga is with them but this pace can't be good.

Anonymous said...

Indeed crazy. I think they will pull it off though.

welemta said...

What is Megra thinking? He is injecting pace.

welemta said...

Deriba can't keep this up.

Anonymous said...

Does not look good. This is way too fast. Maybe the front pack will melt.

Anonymous said...

D. Merga is going for it:) 2.04 pace is way too fast though...

Anonymous said...

Tsegaye is actually not far behind. He is about to pick off the Spaniard.
FOr some reason, I just think he is our best hope. He is younger and talented.

Anonymous said...

Do you think the Kenyans wanted to open a gap early to drop most of the runners, play a mental game, and then slow down the pace?

welemta said...

Agree Tsegaye is the best of the three. He is running from behind. The pace will have to slow.

Gashaw is a strong runner and smart but I am not sure how he is physically.

Anonymous said...

Eritrean leading? Do they know what they are doing?

Anonymous said...

the eritreans are looking good, they don't look as stressed. I think they'll medal.

welemta said...

No one know what the Kenyans were thinking. If they had a plan this was a crazy plan.

Anonymous said...

Tsegaye is back with the lead pack! Good running.

Anonymous said...

I will buy you all a beer if we get a medal:)

The Eritrean and Ethiopian sharing a bottle. Beautiful:)

Anonymous said...

did u see the eritreans and ethios sharing water... that was a great moment :)

welemta said...

Not sure what the Kenyans are thinking. Deriba kept up with the surge. He is hanging in there. Will have to see how long he holds up.

Anonymous said...

Tsegaye is not playing the cat and mouse game. He is running within himself.

Ryan Hall is running funny. He is lifting his legs up high. Not sure what he was advised.

roocha said...

Ryan Hall always runs like that. Missed the water bottle moment... feeding kids dinner, life has to go on eventhough I think it should stop for the marathon.

roocha said...

My picks Wanjiru and Gharib are still in the lead pack and Hall is smart enough to run a pace that will get him up front by the end

welemta said...

Gashaw Asfaw sittign at #11 after 15k.

Anonymous said...

Deriba Mega is going to collapse.

roocha said...

Lel, Wanjiru, Merga, Kifle were all in the top 7 at London this year... should know each other well. Gharib is very good in warm weather- Chicago 2007 photo finish in 80 deg weather.

welemta said...

20K Gashaw in 10th @20K

Anonymous said...

Deribe Merga is in the leading group and seems confident. Good for him. Tsegaye is 15 seconds behind.

roocha said...

1:02:38 for half... suicide, they will all blow up

Anonymous said...

Interesting! Yonas and Deriba are chatting:)

Tsegaye just picked off Yared, the other Eritrean.

roocha said...

Merga, wow... he won a race in Nazreth (warm) last year. He is also the half-marathon champ from 2007 All-Africa Games. He is the only elite that still competes in races in Ethiopia. May be this is his reward.

welemta said...

Tempreture climbing now 78. Jaouad Gharib fighting to stay with the pack. He is dangerous if he stays with the pack. Yonas Kifle, 2:07:34runner looking good.

Anonymous said...

Its great to see such sportsmanship between the Ethiopian and Eritrean. I hope they won't let stupid politics cloud this spirit and set themselves as great examples for the rest of us.

Anonymous said...

Deriba is punishing these guys. He looks good.

welemta said...

Nice shot of Yared ERI & Tsegaye ETH working together.

Anonymous said...

anonymous. It is wonderful, indeed.

roocha said...

Anyone has a streaming link? NBC is cutting away too much and ETV promised live coverage but they have the Men 5000M on a continuous loop.

Anonymous said...

http://www.aelling-online-tv.dk/
Select Sports Tv from the first drop down and from the second drop down Norway NRK 1 station.
You will also need to download koo player. When you select, it will give you a link to download it from.

Anonymous said...

roocha,

http://olympicslivechannel.blogspot.com/

The second window has live streaming feed of the marathon (arab chan)

Hope this helps

welemta said...

Look at Deriba.

roocha said...

Thanks Yekolo... but having problem with it. Only 30 min left to troubleshoot.

GO DERIBA- he won the Great Ethiopian Run in Addis couple years back which was his breakthrough.

Anonymous said...

He is flying. He will get something out of this.

Anonymous said...

Deriba is doing great! I wonder how far back Tesfaye is.

NBC is driving me nuts!

welemta said...

Hope Deriba he does not cramp. Gharib does is still there. If he sticks around he is dangerous. He has not done any work.

Anonymous said...

welemta...I agree but he is just hanging on.

Tsegaye and Yared are chasing the leaders. Not sure how far behind.

roocha said...

Those with non-NBC link, please post updates. A break could be made during so many of these commercials and we would miss it.

Anonymous said...

Yonas Kifle 1.25 behind.
Tsegaye is 1.52 behind the leaders.
Yonas seems to have recovered.
Lel has fallen back.

welemta said...

For splits check...

Tsegaye was off by more than a minute @30K

Anonymous said...

sorry. Lel is 1.30 behind. and Gashasw assfaw about 3.45 behind.
Tsegaye 1.52 behind.

Anonymous said...

Ouch. Deriba bombing.

welemta said...

Deriba gave it a good run.

Anonymous said...

our best hope is 3rd now.... so sad to see Merga fade away

Anonymous said...

welemta...I agree. That is all I ask for.

Anonymous said...

Deriba does not look good. The chase group is not far behind. Let us cross our fingers. He has given up. He is checking back.

welemta said...

Look for Yonas Kifle for 3rd place. Tsegay could end up finishing 4th.

roocha said...

Yekolo- the link worked for me now. Thanks so much!!!

Anonymous said...

Tsegaye is not far behind Deriba

welemta said...

Bronze is going to be ours.

roocha said...

In all honesty, it's about time a Kenyan won the Olympic Marathon.

roocha said...

2:06:32 in these conditions!!!

Anonymous said...

Tsegaye is gonna take him:)

roocha said...

This is interesting.... two Ethiopians battling for Bronze!

welemta said...

Go Tsegaye!

welemta said...

Look at Tsegaye. He looks good.

roocha said...

Deriba will collapse at the finish...

welemta said...

Tsegaye!

roocha said...

May be he will collapse before the finish

welemta said...

Funny Tsegaye did not want to stop running. Looks good.

roocha said...

Deriba actually walked the last step. GUTSY, GUTSY... I bet he has no regret. Tsegaye Kebede ran a BRILLIANT race within satying within his limits. How would Haile have done??

welemta said...

All three runners finished. In fact Ethiopia was the best team. #3, #4 & #7. The problem is #4 & #7 do not count. I wonder how they would have done if they had run as a team?

welemta said...

Yekolo,

Good call on Tsegaye!

Anonymous said...

Disappointed with the finish. But good running.

roocha said...

roocha said...
I predict:

Ryan Hall
Sammy Wanjiru
Jaoud Gharib

7:47 PM

Did I mention I picked two out of three right?! Look here for my prediction of another race:

roocha said...

And all of a sudden, the Olympics are over :( :(

welemta said...

Roocha,

I am getting out of the prediction business. I have figured out that it's not for me.

Anonymous said...

Great run from our team:)I owe you all a beer!

he would have said the truth kenya is strong in marathon.and thats why gebre dint participate because he was afraid of the kenyans.gebre hold the world record but the truth is that he never won compitive marathon.
